Programs PLEASE NOTE: there are no residential facilities at either the Toronto or Brisbane Zendo. Dates for Intensive, Zazenkai and Intensives are not posted on this site as schedules might change. Please send an email to info@mountainmoon.org for more detailed information.
Regular zazen evenings are held one night each week, during which there are four twenty-five minute periods of zazen interspersed with five minutes of walking meditation (Kinhin). These periods are observed in silence. The meetings conclude with recitation of the Four Great Vows, tea and general conversation. When Seiun Roshi is in residence she provides dokusan to her students during Wednesday evening sittings. Dokusan is the term used for a student's one to one contact with an authorized Zen Master and is an integral part of Zen practice. In her absence, the assistant teachers are authorized to offer "interview" during Wednesday evening sittings and at scheduled weekend events. Interview simply offers assistance in the practise but does not examine the state of that practise – which is what Dokusan is about.
The orientation program is comprised of five lectures given in Brisbane during a purpose-structured weekend, which also incorporates a Zazenkai (see below). They are also available on Wednesday zazen evenings. In Toronto, these are given on successive Wednesday zazen evenings by prior arrangement. These lectures provide information on the basics of Zen practice and include an introduction to the aims and methods of our Zen tradition. They are a prerequisite to formal practice with Sei'un Roshi. For Orientation dates and/or to register to attend please use the email contact or phone numbers listed below.
This is a day of zazen with Dokusan / Interview and a Teisho (a particular kind of Dharma talk). You will need to bring your own lunch that requires neither heating nor refrigeration. Tea and coffee are available.
Reserved for Sangha members, these are non-residential weekend events that begin on Friday nights and conclude on Sunday afternoons. They include four periods of Dokusan / Interview and a Teisho and are more formal than zazenkais. Silence is maintained throughout in order for a deeper level of concentration and mindfulness to develop. Attendance is by application to Sei'un Roshi or, in Brisbane to the assistant teacher leading that Intensive.
Sesshin [lit. "to touch the heart-mind"] is an intensive several-day residential program of Zen practice. Again, silence is maintained throughout. A written application to attend must be made to Sei'un Roshi. It is not necessary to be her student to attend Sesshin, although it is not recommended for those with little or no experience of Zen. Persons who are not Sei’un Roshi’s students are accepted on a case-by-case basis and must apply to her one month in advance. Participating in other Sangha activities is suggested prior to undertaking such an intensive Zen program. Sesshin is currently conducted each year in Brisbane during eight days of the (Queensland) September/October school holidays and in Toronto over the Easter weekend for six days.
